The next morning, Maaya woke earlier than she thought she would, feeling refreshed and in even less pain than the day before. Even as she pulled herself to her feet, she realized the pain was almost entirely gone, and she found herself excited at the prospect of experimenting with libris once again. She knew that the true danger of using this magic was ignoring her own limits, and she was sure that eventually sheâd be able to get it down.
Beside her, Kim stirred, then rubbed her eyes as she slowly awoke.
âOh! Sorry to wake you, I didnât think youâd still be here,â Maaya said, giving up on trying to put her shoes on quietly.
âSâokay,â Kim mumbled. âWhere are you going?â
âI want to go see someone. Sheâs the person who helped me find this place to stay. Actually...â Maaya trailed off thoughtfully, then smiled and continued, âwould you like to come with me?â
âOh! That would be fun!â Kim agreed, immediately throwing off her comforters and searching for her clothes. âIâll only be a minute. Whereâs Saber?â
Maaya looked around, but the ghost was nowhere in sight.
âI donât actuallyââ
âGetting breakfast!â came Saberâs voice from nearby, and almost immediately after, Maaya found herself holding a warm cheese-filled croissant. The ghost darted inside the door and gave a second one to Kim, who immediately stopped in the middle of getting dressed to start eating. âWhatâs this? Going to see Bindhiya without me having to practically shove you in her direction?â
âYes, and hush,â Maaya said through a mouthful of delicious bread. âI want to talk to her about joining Hari to help out.â
âI thought you were just paying him lip service. Well done,â Saber chuckled. âOh, is Kim going with you?â
âYes, but she doesnât know whatâs going on yet. Want to fill her in while I finish eating?â
Saber obliged, and as Maaya finished the last of her breakfast, Saber explained everything from who Bindhiya and Hari were to what role Bindhiya played in their town and among the people they knew. A few minutes later, Kim looked slightly overwhelmed, but more eager still.
âSo sheâs like a superhero,â Kim said.
Maaya and Saber shared a glance.
âYeah, basically,â Maaya said. âI canât even guess how many people sheâs kept alive by doing what sheâs doing. Sheâs honestly amazing. Thatâs part of why I want to go see her today, so I can do something to give back.â
âI want to help! Sheâs helped me too, even if Iâve never met her,â Kim exclaimed immediately.
âIâm sure sheâd love to have you. The more help the better, especially during the winter,â Maaya said, unconsciously wrapping her coat more tightly around her. The sun had been up for a few hours now, but Maaya felt like it was offering only light without warmth. Winter brought out the true colors of Sark that were in every other season disguised by the warm weather trying its best in vain.
Between Kimâs excitement and Maaya finally feeling well enough to walk without wincing every other step, they made good time to Bindhiyaâs apartment.
